Bright 2010 Annual Report movie Print Email

Here's a 10 minute 'movie', with highlights of the year, and our accounts, interspersed with photos from marion's August 2011 stay back at St Ann's, Tottenham. (With huge thanks to Barnet, Enfield & Haringey for permission to use the photos and for being so lovely to marion during her admission.)

Star Wards' Impact Review Print Email

As Zhou Enlai didn't say, when asked about the impact of the French Revolution of 1789, it isn't too soon to say.We can unequivocally say that we do know about Star Wards' impact, thanks to the masses of generous, warm and cuddly feedback about the difference Star Wards is making. But we thought we should check it out a bit more systematically! Many thanks again to all of you who spent the time filling in our Stupidly Big Members' Survey. The report by Prof Alan Simpson (woo! grand!) is downloadable here:

And if you're curious about other evidence of Star Wards' impact, you can download a short summary here:  Star_Wards_Impact_Review_2010_in_brief.doc

And if, for some reason, you'd really like to know all the details, here's the very long version of our Impact Review:  StarWards_Impact_Review_2010_Full.doc

Principles and practices Print Email

Star Wards' underlying and transferable principles and practices

1. Structure

  • voluntary involvement by wards, ideas and inspiration not standards and compulsion
  • flexible framework for:
  • shining light on, bringing together, celebrating and getting validation for existing good practice
  • structuring priority ward improvement developments

Star Wards - Evidence base Print Email

Our work has an eclectic range of influences, most of which also form the evidence base. There are all the predictable (and therefore important!) ones - the reports and research anguishing over the state of acute care. These are included in the Star Wards’ publication. The following is a list of other publications, and people, that inform, influence and enliven our work.

Bright organisationally

Ricardo Semler, author of Maverick and The Seven Day Weekend. Semler’s large, disparate and successful Brazilian company is run in an astonishingly laid-back, employee-determined way. Semler’s trust in staff and their resultant freedom to organise themselves, gives us the inspiration and confidence to keep operational policies to the minimum (currently none) and generally be highly flexible and responsive.

Star Wards - The back story Print Email

Marion Janner

It all began with an email in March 2003. A very unproblematic one from a work colleague asking to postpone our non-urgent meeting. The impact was bizarre — oceans of tears accompanied by loose thoughts about failure. But I was mainly completely gob-smacked by such an unexpected response to a miniature issue.

Fast-forward a year and I’m in The Priory, another year and I’m sectioned and on a locked ward in St Ann’s. And now in 2006, we’ve got the launch of the Star Wards’ publication. What follows is a brief run-through of how one thing led to another.

In case you're wondering about our views on national developments and whether we're always always so relentlessly smiley and placid.

Funding

We are very very fortunate to have had generous, flexible and encouraging funders, which are mostly charitable foundations. We seriously love them.

A huge thank you to our amazing funders:

Smile Allen Lane Foundation

Smile Comic Relief

Smile Department of Health

Smile Esmée Fairbairn Foundation

Smile John Ellerman Foundation

Smile LankellyChase Foundation

Smile London Development Centre

Smile UnLtd

We recently introduced a £500 a year membership fee for our private sector ward members, and while not universally ecstatically received, this is beginning to bring in welcome new funds.

A special thanks to Ralph Lazar and Lisa Swerling of the fabulissimo Harold's Planet for letting us include their genius daily cartoon on our home page. Please do visit their inspired, uplifting website:
