Ian Hulatt, Mental Health Lead at the RCN, describes their new video, Mental Health Nursing: Keep it in Mind.

The mental  health nursing forum here at the RCN wanted to find a medium to convey not only the diverse ways in  which its members work but also attempt to surface the traditionally considered “invisible” way they work as nurses. This DVD attempts by interviewing practising nurses to convey something about who they are and what they do. It is a collection of simple everyday accounts of the very real difference they make in the lives of those they work with, including the experience of a client cared for at times of crisis. Challenging and at times moving this DVD is also available to view on the front page of the RCN website at www.rcn.org.uk

Or you can see it on the Star Wards’ youtube channel:

Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this Marion :D I am a second year nursing student. I have recently gone through a wee "pickle" of my own so I find I can relate to what you have shared. I am very much looking forward to my career as a nurse and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
Thank you

Hi Jamie
Thanks so much for your comment. I've just come home after an unexpected (but voluntary!) few days back in hospital. The nurses were so, so awesome - truly empathetic, wise, human, warm...and v non-judgemental. I'm a nightmare inpatient what with all the self-harming (and then being specialled, and negotiating to stop being specialled, and then self-harming again....) but the nurses were saintly.
So... it's wonderful to hear from someone who is so committed to supporting people when they've finally lost it, and your ability to empathise from direct experience will seriously enhance your impact with patients. Oops. That's all rather unempathetic of me! Sorry! I must swiftly add that I'm v sorry to hear that you've been through a tough time recently and hope you're now feeling much better.
Thanks again for contacting us.
